In each case, law enforcement called Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM). K-9 Alert Search and Rescue Dogs responded to the call. Based in Richmond, Virginia, K-9 Alert responds to missing and lost persons in wilderness and urban settings, cadaver and water cadaver searches statewide.
Live Find dogs rely on the dogs ability to pick up on human scent over vast areas. There are two categories of live find, non-discriminant scent and trailing dogs.
A non-discriminant air-scent dog samples the air currents for the scent of any human, follows it to the source, and reports back to the handler. These teams are often called wilderness search teams because the style is suited to large tracts of unpopulated land. This requires the dog to cover large areas quickly, off lead, quite some distance from their handler.
Tracking/trailing dogs, or scent-specific dogs, are trained to follow the unique scent of an individual. Tracking or trailing dogs is done on a long line with the handler following the dog on the track.
Live Find dogs help locate missing subjects in any weather condition at any time. They save lives and help make sure loved ones get home.
Dogs who have trained for (HRD) are commonly referred to as "cadaver dogs". They use air-scent methods to search for the scent of human decomposition, to the exclusion of all others, eventually pinpointing the source and alerting the handler.
These dogs may work on land or in special cases shoreline or water recovery.
Human Remains Detection dogs help solve cold cases and bring closure to families.
